What We Study. . .
Everyday we make decisions. These decisions range from life-changing ones, such as buying a house, to more mundane ones such as choosing the clothes we wear or the food we eat. For individuals with substance use issues, the decisions they make oftentimes puzzles the layperson. Why do they continue to drink or use drugs despite the harmful consequences to their health and to their lives? Even "normal" people, when intoxicated, make awful decisions, such as drunk driving or engaging in unsafe sex. Making matters worse, some individuals with substance use disorders are reluctant to seek or engage in treatment.
Our goal is to further understand these counterintuitive decisions made by people with substance use disorder or by people who are intoxicated. In our lab, we focus on a broad spectrum of unhealthy and harmful behaviors such as substance use-related sexual assault, drunk driving, and unprotected sex. Although we investigate psychological mechanisms and distal variables implicated in these problems, our ultimate goal is to develop prevention and treatment programs to alleviate these unhealthy and harmful behaviors.
